Understand every whistle on matchday

Rugby runs on some of the most dynamic, tightly structured laws in world sport. Not sure why the forwards pack down, or how offside works at the ruck? Start with short visual explainers that make the laws easier to follow by kickoff.

A green and a gold player stay on their feet in contact over a released ball while support players wait behind the ruck.

What creates a ruck?

After a tackle, the ball-carrier must release the ball. Players from either team can then stay on their feet, bind over it, and contest possession. They must enter through the gate from behind their own back foot or risk a penalty.

The green and gold front rows bind squarely as a scrum-half feeds the rugby ball into the central tunnel.

How a scrum packs down

A scrum restarts play after a minor infringement, such as a knock-on or forward pass. Eight forwards from each team bind in three rows and push while the scrum-half feeds the ball into the tunnel.

Green defenders and gold attackers hold flat lines behind their respective sides of a central ruck.

Where the offside line sits

At a ruck, each team's offside line runs across the pitch through its own last foot. Players must stay behind that line until the ball is available. Moving beyond it too early can concede a penalty.

A player grounds the ball for a try while other players demonstrate a conversion kick and a drop goal near the posts.

How rugby scoring works

Grounding the ball over the try-line scores 5 points and earns a conversion attempt worth 2. A successful penalty kick or drop goal adds 3 points.

Green and gold rugby forwards form a lineout as lifted jumpers contest a single ball thrown down the middle corridor.

How a lineout restarts play

When the ball crosses the touchline, the forwards form two parallel lines. The hooker throws straight down the corridor while teammates lift a jumper to catch or tap the ball back.

A green ball-carrier remains upright with the ball as bound teammates drive against gold defenders in a rugby maul.

How a maul moves forward

A maul forms when the ball-carrier stays on their feet and players from both teams bind on. Teammates join from behind and drive together while keeping the ball safely off the ground.

FAQ

When does beta kick off? +

Closed beta access is rolling out soon. We are finishing the final content, testing, and store submission work now. Join the waitlist and you will be first in line when TestFlight and Play Internal invites go live.

Can I play for free? +

Yes. Ruck Rugby will be free to play at launch. Daily Test, Quick Match, Topic Rounds, Live Quiz, Country Leagues, and Head to Head duels will all be open from day one. Ruck Pro may arrive later with extra perks, but core gameplay will stay free.

Will ads interrupt play? +

No pop-ups between questions. No banner clutter. No rewarded video forcing its way into the match. We may introduce sponsor-backed events in the future, but ads will never decide rankings, matchmaking, or leaderboard position.

Why is it called Ruck? +

A ruck is where rugby gets contested after the tackle. It is pressure, timing, and control in one moment. That is the spirit of the app: show up daily, win the contest, climb the table.

Are you connected to GORUCK? +

No connection. GORUCK is a fitness and gear brand built around weighted backpacks. Ruck Rugby is a rugby trivia app built for fans, players, rivalries, and match-day bragging rights.
